This quote has been a reminder that I am in charge of the direction my life navigates, that I am to take responsibility for whatever the outcome is, as a result of my decision.

More often than not, the natural human nature has been programmed not to always bother about things it is not directly involved with. Most people who take the extra step to change or correct a thing, when they are not directly involved always seem to act based on a psychological compulsiveness to ensure a need is met. Even those who appear not to be bothered also derive some sort of satisfaction from the end result.

The simple fact that one notices or spots a wrong should only trigger the need to ACT. The psyche of leaving out responsibilities always end up with some sort of regret; directly or indirectly.

It always seem as though it is a routine to wake up and go about and go about our daily routines without regard for what seemingly happens within our environment. Like the typical human, we are not nettled since the probability of being affected is low.

In actual reflection, it is our responsibility as humans and inhabitants who still value the environment and its sustainability, to ascertain that we all are free from any form of environmental hazard as a result of negligence in terms of the protection of the environment.

A recent development was reported in the DAILY SUN newspaper published on Thursday, 22nd September, 2016, regarding the endless flooding and refuse dump that has made life unbearable for inhabitants of Igando Community in Lagos, Nigeria. The annual occurrence during rainy season in the area has left many of its inhabitants with no choice than to vacate. The Ministry of Commerce marked out the area to serve as a plastic recycling centre but for one reason or the other, it has been turned to a refuse dump.

Despite efforts of the residents to Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) to ensure something was done regarding this menace, it proved abortive. Aside the ugly site of refuse, the stench oozing from the area, has put residents’ health at risk.

One of the reasons for the scourge was the tawdry chore carried out by the contractors who handled the channelization of the drains. Improper forecasting of unforeseen circumstances such as heavy flooding has given rise to citizens within this community to be living in a hellhole.

Humanity in its totality needs continuity. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to tackle anything that may likely pose a threat to its inhabitants.

Environmental sustainability should be inculcated at all levels of learning within the country. We may not actually go very far in the quest for environmental sustainability until it becomes a culture.
Climate change is real and it is happening. Environmental sustainability is a TEAM work. And just like the acronym Together Everyone Achieves More (TEAM). We are a TEAM.

I Am Involved. You Should Be Involved Too. We cannot relocate to Jupiter if Earth becomes unlivable.
